The International Human Rights Week, jointly organised by Sichrem, St. Joseph’s College and Indian Social Institute, Bangalore, came to a close on Thursday.
Speaking on the occasion, Chairperson of the Karnataka State Commission for Protection of Child Rights Neena P. Naik emphasised the need for the youth of Bangalore to be more proactive and help the poor, needy and people with disabilities. Head of the Department of Political Science in Bangalore University Jeevan Kumar said there was a need for people to be aware of their responsibilities and work towards getting more human right entitlements for the oppressed. Earlier in the day, members of the Human Rights Forum for Dalit Liberation - Karnataka (HRFDL-K) staged a protest against the State Government for ignoring the Dalts and their welfare.
The members submitted a memorandum to the Social Welfare Minister D. Sudhakar demanding appointment of a retired judge rather than a MLA as the chairman of the Karnataka State Commission for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes.
The members also demanded that the Government appoint an official exclusively to handle issues concerning women, a task force to look after the atrocities against the Dalits and to monitor funds earmarked for welfare of the Dalits.
