Nagercoil: Organising seminars, taking out processions and an exhibition to highlight the achievements of women marked the celebrations of International Women's Day in different parts of Kanyakumari district on Thursday.
National Women Front members took out a procession from Nagercoil Veppamoodu junction to the Collectorate urging the government to put an end to infanticide and sexual harassment, violence against women, dowry harassments etc. District president Ayisha led the procession.
Individual Women Iyyakkam, in cooperation with Master Trust based at Kothaigramam, celebrated Women's Day. Deputy Director (Health) M. Madusoodhanan, who presided over the meeting, said that the government had been implementing various welfare and development schemes exclusively meant for women in the State with an intention to uplift their socio-economic status. By making use of these schemes, they need not depend on the mercy of others.
One could mention so many success stories of women self-help groups which successfully undertook economic activities in the district. The chairman of Kodayar irrigation project of Public Works Department (WRO), Vins Anto, the secretary of Individual Women Iyakkam, Shanthi, director of Master Trust, Tho.Nainar, participated.
International Women day was also celebrated at South Travancore Hindu College in Nagercoil The MLA of Vilavancode Assembly segment, S.Vijayadharani, who participated the function urged the government to pass the women reservation bill at Parliament. A similar bill had already been passed in Pakistan. Unless the bill was enacted in Parliament, women could not raise their voice against atrocities unleashed against them.
The International Women's Day was celebrated at James College of Engineering and Technology at Navalcadu near Nagercoil.
The chairman of the college, J. Premkumar, took the opportunity to recognise, acknowledge, recall and honour the achievements, sacrifices, and remarkable services contributed to society by the women from all walks of life. An exhibition was conducted on the college premises to highlight the achievements of womenfolk in the society..
